The Case

The principal mr. Satoh asked the architect mr. de Maat to design a Dutch house for a location in Tokyo. Being familiar with Dutch housing the principal appreciates the efficient layouts, the access of daylight and the materials used in Dutch architecture.

Many questions rose. What is a typical Dutch house? What is non-Japanese? Is a Dutch house convenient in Japan? What is the context of the location? Can a Japanese principal and a Dutch architect work together?

Does the principal know Dutch housing from Japanese? Oh yes, he lived in Holland for over five years and even mastered the Dutch language. Does the architect know anything about Tokyo and architecture? Well, he worked on an architecture guide on Tokyo last year and cycled over 2.500 km in Tokyo to take some 10.000 pictures...

Above all the case is a international, intercontinental, intercultural, trilingual, interpersonal challenge.
